Programs : Youth Enrichment : Home
In an age of tremendous freedom and when parents frequently have to work long hours, impressionable young people need a safe, welcoming, structured place to spend time. They need a place where they can experience belonging, where the positive values of their family, school and community are reinforced, and where they are challenged to grow. Such needs are more pronounced among low-income, inner-city youth who may have fewer positive choices.
The CYO Youth Enrichment Program strives to engage 5th – 8th grades students who are struggling socially. The four goals of the CYO Youth Enrichment Program are to:
- Develop skills to become more responsible at home and in the community.
- Provide support in character development and social interaction.
- Provide incentives to stay in school, excel in academics and improve behavior.
- Provide a safe and fun environment that includes recreation and socialization.
Activities include:
- Pregnancy Prevention Education
- Discussions on Making Smart Decisions and Building Self-Esteem
- Field Trips
- Cooking Activities
- Arts and Crafts
- Brain Teasers and Games
- Age and Content Appropriate Movies
- Homework Assistance
Who is Eligible?
Referrals come directly from the Akron Public Schools, although we also accept participants from Catholic, Charter, or Private Schools. We anticipate that participation in the program will improve the youth’s social skills, behavior, and self-esteem in hopes of them bettering their school lives, home environment, and communities as a whole.
What is the Cost?
There is no cost to families for this service. Children, with parent approval, may bring spending money on field trips. However, the children will be solely responsible for holding it.
When is the Youth Enrichment Program?
Youth Enrichment meets four days per week, Monday – Thursday from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm. A snack is provided followed by a structured activity. Students are then transported home from CYO by certified drivers.
Youth Enrichment is funded by the Summit County Department of Job and Family Services, Akron Community Foundation, City of Akron-Neighborhood Partnership, The United Way of Summit County, Cleveland Catholic Charities, and Private Donations.
